"...and they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means,
begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry"
                                                                                               II Corinthians 8:3-4

Brief Background…

The First Lutheran Foundation was formed as a North Dakota corporation on May 27, 1965. Its founding purpose was to support the educational ministries of the congregation, and to provide tuition support for any First Lutheran member who attends seminary in preparation for ordained ministry. Since 1965, the foundation has provided the tuition for at least 20 students who have gone on to serve congregations around the country, or serve as missionaries overseas.

How Does the Fund Work?

The Foundation receives gifts of securities, insurance or cash, and holds them in trust in the form of investments.  The principal of all gifts is held in perpetuity (forever).  Only the income (such as interest or dividends) from the investments is released and used in support of the foundation’s educational aims.

First Lutheran Foundation Accomplishments...

Giving feels good, and it accomplishes much!  Here are just a few examples of what gifts to the foundation have helped accomplish:

  • In 2011 the board released nearly $30,000 to help provide new furnishings for our parish education center classrooms after they were destroyed in the 2011 flood.
  • The Foundation recently gave a gift of $65,000 to support the educational aims of the "Creating Connections" Capital Campaign.
The Foundation's pride and joy is the work it accomplishes outside our congregation:
  • The Foundation has provided the support needed for 20 of our members to go on to the ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Lutheran church.
A Few Testimonials...
  • “Because I graduated from Seminary with no student loans to repay, I have never had to focus on salary when I have considered a Call; and that has made all the difference in the world.  I have been free to serve where Called and not be distracted by having to service a debt.”   Pastor Loren Odland
  • “The support of the foundation has been so important for me…I received a fantastic theological education at Luther Seminary that helps me in the day-to-day work of ministry.”    Pastor Pete Speiser
  • “I am truly grateful to the First Lutheran Foundation for funding my seminary education. The Foundation’s purpose of supporting men and women through their seminary studies is and will forever be its legacy to Christ and Christ’s church.”   Reverend Bradley W. Davick
The Gift...

In the past 50 years, the foundation has seen its assets grow from just over $5,000 to nearly $800,000 at the end of 2014.  In early 2015, the foundation received word of a bequest from a member’s estate for $100,000. That gift has inspired the foundation board to authorize a special 50th anniversary congregational appeal to match that large gift, and ultimately bring the total endowment of the First Lutheran Foundation to over $1,000,000 by the end of 2015.

The Goal...

Our goal is to have 100 new donors or donations in 2015.  Please consider being a supporter of the First Lutheran Foundation with a current gift of cash or securities, a memorial, or include the foundation in your estate planning.  If you would like to visit with someone about deferred or estate giving, contact the church office and we can put you in touch with a qualified consultant who works along with your own legal representative and/or financial planner.
