Gather in Faith - Grow through Grace - Share the Good News of Jesus Christ!

                                                   June 1, 2020
If you’ve turned on the news recently, you’ve likely seen the shift in focus from the Coronavirus pandemic to escalating tensions over the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis Police Officer that was recorded and shared across the world. The news shows scenes of peaceful protests and communities standing up against systemic racism, but these are often over-shadowed by what seems like senseless violence and destruction. With everything we have been through and continue to endure, perhaps you feel like me; my heart and soul feel despairing and shattered. Mix into that the stress of wrestling with when and how to gather again for in person worship in the sanctuary, and I am just exhausted.

However, in the midst of chaos, the promise of the Pentecost story from last week reminds us that the Holy Spirit is at work in the turmoil of this world. I attended the Memorial Gathering for George Floyd that was held here in Minot at Oak Park on Pentecost Sunday. With everything going on in other communities, I’ll admit I was a little nervous but decided I didn’t want to let my fear keep me from standing in solidarity with those who are impacted by the racist systems and beliefs of others. So, most of my family and I went to the rally, and it was inspiring. All of the speakers were African American and spoke positively about local Police officers and their experiences of calling Minot their home. They shared their grief and frustration for senseless violence and destruction, and they spoke about the common bonds of being human.
One line that stuck out to me from one of the speakers was,
"When we live and we lead with love for all people,
there is no room for hate."

This powerful and peaceful gathering that centered on speaking up when we see another human oppressed, gave me hope. Our Christian faith calls us to live and lead with God’s love for all people and it sure felt to me like the Holy Spirit was blowing through the large crowd that was gathered that day and I pray that it could be the start of some much needed reconciliation and healing for our country. I am glad I went.
On another note, we did have an in-person worship service last Wednesday in the new church parking lot. This was an experiment for us, and we’ll see what was learned from that gathering.
Your Church Council will be holding its regular June meeting on Tuesday, June 9th and one major discussion topic will again be how and when to safely and responsibly begin re-opening our building and worship services for in person gatherings in light of the many varying recommendations and guidelines from different agencies.
We do know that next Sunday, June 14 will be the same broadcast only service that we have been doing, but we will, as always, keep you updated on decisions and plans going forward.
Will you join me in prayer this week for our congregation, our community and our country,
and that we may “live and lead with love for all people”?
In God’s Grip,

Pastor Ellery
